LED light therapy and skin wellness — what the science says

LED light therapy sounds like a gimmick until you understand photobiomodulation. Here's how the wavelengths differ, what they're designed to support, and how we use light at Helix.

Light as a treatment, not a mood

The first time someone describes LED light therapy to you, it sounds like wellness theater — sit under a colored panel, feel better. Understandable skepticism. But the mechanism has a name, a decades-long research literature, and a reasonably clear story: photobiomodulation.

Here’s the short version. Certain wavelengths of light penetrate skin and are absorbed by chromophores in your cells — most notably cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. When that absorption happens, it influences cellular energy production and downstream signaling. That’s it. No heat, no ablation, no injury. Light in, cellular signal changed.

The reason it took a while to be taken seriously is that the effect depends heavily on getting the details right: wavelength, power density, distance, and duration. Cheap devices at the wrong dose do very little, which produced a lot of unimpressed early adopters and a fair amount of noise.

The wavelengths, and what each is used for

Not all LED therapy is the same treatment wearing different colors. The wavelength determines how deep the light goes and what it interacts with.

Blue (roughly 415nm) stays shallow — it barely gets past the epidermis. Its best-studied use is targeting Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria implicated in acne. If you’ve seen blue light in a facial protocol, that’s why.

Red (roughly 630–660nm) reaches the dermis, where fibroblasts live and collagen gets made. This is the range most associated with skin tone, texture, fine lines, and calming visible redness.

Near-infrared (roughly 800–1060nm) goes deeper still — past skin into soft tissue. This is the range used to support recovery, circulation, and post-treatment comfort rather than surface appearance specifically.

What LED therapy is designed to support

We’ll be careful here, because this is exactly the topic where marketing tends to outrun evidence. LED light therapy is not a cure for anything, and results are individual.

What the research reasonably supports, and what many clients report:

  • Skin tone and texture — red light is designed to support the fibroblast activity involved in collagen production.
  • Visible redness and irritation — light therapy is often used to help calm reactive skin.
  • Post-procedure comfort — this is why red-light therapy is included at no extra charge with every SkinPen microneedling treatment, and in the Deluxe and Platinum HydraFacial tiers. Light after a controlled-injury treatment is a sensible pairing.
  • Recovery and perceived energy — the near-infrared end, stacked with PEMF and other recovery modalities.

What it isn’t: fast. This is a cumulative, consistency-dependent modality. One session is pleasant. Twelve sessions over six weeks is a protocol. Anyone promising you a transformation in a single sitting is selling something.

Is it safe, and does it hurt?

LED light therapy is non-thermal and non-ablative — there’s no UV, no burning, no downtime. You sit or lie down, wear eye protection, and the session runs 10–20 minutes. Most people describe it as warm and mildly boring, which is roughly the correct experience.

The main considerations we screen for at consultation are photosensitizing medications and certain skin conditions. That conversation takes two minutes and it’s worth having.
