FAQ

Photobiomodulation therapy — common questions

What is red light therapy, mechanically?

It's photobiomodulation — specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light delivered to tissue. The light is absorbed by chromophores in your cells, most notably in the mitochondria, and that absorption is designed to support cellular energy production. It's non-thermal and non-ablative: nothing is being heated, cut, or removed. You're supplying an input, not causing an injury.

Why do the wavelengths matter?

Because different wavelengths penetrate to different depths. Shorter red wavelengths act nearer the surface — relevant to skin. Longer near-infrared reaches deeper into muscle and joint tissue. A panel running a single wavelength is doing one job. Our sauna's Platinum LED system spans seven wavelengths from 480nm to 1060nm, which covers considerably more of that range in one session.

How does it feel, and is there downtime?

It feels like warm light and nothing else. No downtime, no recovery, no aftercare. It's one of the few things on our menu you can genuinely do on a lunch break and then go straight back to your day.

How often, and for how long?

Red light rewards consistency far more than duration — several shorter sessions a week generally beat one long one. If you're coming often, the Optimize membership at $199/month includes unlimited red light, infrared sauna, PEMF, BrainTap, compression and contrast therapy, which works out cheaper than paying per session for most regulars.

Should I do it before or after a workout?

Both are defensible and clients do each. In a full recovery stack we'd put it in the middle of the sequence — after HBOT, before contrast — which is how we'd generally order one. If you're building a routine around training, tell us your schedule at your consult and we'll sequence it with you rather than hand you a generic rule.

The details

Photobiomodulation therapy, in full

Light as an input

Most of what we do at Helix involves adding something to your body — oxygen, nutrients, a hormone, a peptide. Red light therapy is different. Nothing goes in. You sit in front of a panel, or you sit in a sauna, and specific wavelengths of light do the work.

The mechanism is called photobiomodulation, and it’s less exotic than the name suggests. Red and near-infrared light is absorbed by chromophores in your cells — largely in the mitochondria, the structures that produce your cellular energy. That absorption is designed to support how those mitochondria function. It’s non-thermal and non-ablative: nothing is heated, ablated, or injured.

Which is why it’s the single easiest thing on our menu to say yes to. There’s no downtime, no aftercare, and no recovery to plan around. $25.

Wavelength is the whole thing

If you take one technical point from this page, take this one: not all red light is the same light.

Different wavelengths reach different depths. Shorter red wavelengths act closer to the surface — which is the range relevant to skin. Longer near-infrared travels further, into muscle and joint tissue. A consumer panel running one or two wavelengths is doing a narrow job, however impressive the marketing.

Our infrared sauna includes clinical-grade photobiomodulation via Platinum LED — seven wavelengths spanning 480nm–1060nm. That’s a genuinely wide spectrum, delivered alongside deep, detoxifying heat in a single session. It pairs cellular light therapy with the sauna rather than making you choose between them.

Three ways to use it

Standalone — $25. The lowest-friction option. Come in, sit, leave. Good if you’re building a habit around frequency rather than intensity, which is how red light works best.

PEMF + Red Light — $40. The bundle we’d suggest if you’re not sure where to start. Two modalities that complement each other, in one visit, for less than booking them separately.

Inside the infrared sauna — $40. Platinum LED, seven wavelengths, deep heat, one session. This is the version people tend to fall in love with — and the reason our sauna gets booked out. The sauna on its own is $30.

Or stack it properly

Red light sits deliberately in the middle of a full recovery sequence:

  1. HBOT (60–90 min)
  2. PEMF + Red Light Therapy
  3. Contrast therapy (sauna/heat → cold plunge)
  4. Compression therapy

Any of those is bookable on its own, and the $40 bundles pair the two that belong together. The $69 1-Hour Recovery Room covers contrast, PEMF, red light, BrainTap and compression in a single hour — HBOT is booked separately, before the room.

Sequence is not decoration here. The order is the product — which is why we sell the pass rather than a list of modalities and a shrug.

Skin, and a clear boundary

Red light therapy is included at no extra charge at the end of every SkinPen microneedling session, and in the Deluxe and Platinum HydraFacial tiers, because it’s a sensible finish to a resurfacing treatment.

But we’ll draw a line here: if your primary concern is pigment, redness, rosacea, or acne scarring, red light is a supporting player, not the answer. That’s a conversation about the Aerolase Neo Elite laser or microneedling. We’d rather route you correctly than sell you thirty light sessions for a problem that needs a different tool.

If you’re coming often

Paying per session stops making sense fast. Optimize ($199/month) already includes unlimited red light, infrared sauna, PEMF, BrainTap, compression and contrast therapy. Peak ($299) adds a monthly drip and a monthly HBOT session, and Limitless ($499) adds coaching, labs and a protocol built around your data. For anyone in more than twice a month, that’s simply the better arithmetic, and we’d rather you know it.
